The present day harvesting technique of Akoya pearl was developed by Kokichi Mikimoto. Mikimoto inserted beads into a mollusk called pinctada martensii in order to grow full-round pearls. The present day names of these mollusks are called Akoya. This technique results in excellent luster to pearls.
