That always appeared to me to be a fact that would be hard to beat as a yard stick between then and now that made a real statement about progress. Recently I became aware of a statistic which blew me away. Just to set the scene, prior to 1908 we didn't have cellophane. In 1909, Thomas Edison shocked the world with the first talking picture. 1911 was the year that the first electrical ignition switch was invented. 1913 saw the presentation of the first crossword puzzle and the first bra and perhaps coincidentally, the first zipper! We did not have the first multiband radio until 1917! The first toaster? 1919! The first band-aid? 1920!! 1943 was a year for fun in at least two ways - silly putty and the slinkee and also synthetic rubber! The audio cassette didn't appear until 1962! The first "pop tart" was Brittney Spears. But I digress. So, 1908 was a very long time ago as regards technological progress. So with the stage now properly set I can deliver this amazing bit of information The average MPG in an average car has worsened 40% since 1908!!! What this means is that if the car manufacturers had not done a thing since 1908 when we didn't have band-aids, radios, zippers, movies, toasters or silly putty then our vehicles would be recieving 40% better gasoline mileage in 2008 than we are factually getting! And with all their design advances car manufacturers have now achieved a reduction in efficiency of 40% since they first began! In what other sector of society or industry can you see such a staggeringly incompetent statistic? I suppose that the only thing close would be our educational system where SAT scores have gone down like a shot duck over the last number of decades we have turned our schools into mental hospitals which emphasize "how students feel about what they are learning" as opposed to if they are actually learning anything of value. As such we have graduates who are illiterate to greater or lesser degree but who are taught alternative lifestyles and death education! Re gasoline mileage though, I have a question... Now that you know this, are you going to just let it be or are you going to get angry You certainly should be angry. As far as scams go this one is one of the greatest in history perhaps only being eclipsed by the tax system, IRS and Federal Reserve! How could an industry with so many billions of dollars of the car industry stack up such a record of failure? Only if that was their aim from the get go.
